A Tale of Two Whales: Noyo Center Academic Paper Published

Noyo Center is excited to share the news that that the Ecological Society of America has published our paper “A Tale of Two Whales” in their journal, Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment. The paper focuses on how our small but mighty organization has utilized emerging technologies to change how scientists and the public are interacting with cetacean specimens. As lead author, Nathaniel Mills oversaw the development of the paper, which included contributions from Noyo Center staff Sheila Semans, Crans Squire, and Sarah Grimes, Maureen Flannery with the California Academy of Sciences, and Jeffrey Jacobson, Noyo Center science advisor and oceanographer specializing in marine acoustics.

Nathaniel, now 21 years old and a student at Reed College in Oregon, has been involved with the Noyo Center since he was 12, when he attended his first summer camp, and has participated as a student intern in marine mammal articulation workshops. He was inspired by his experiences to use his Covid down time to create an academic paper that highlights some of the amazing work the Noyo Center does.
